2. Music Theory, Key Signature & Harmonic Voice-Leading

From a rigorous music theory perspective, "Our Love is God" is established in the serious, noble tragic pathos of D Minor (centered around B-flat), celebrated by masters from Bach to Mozart for austere grandeur. It is structured in standard common time (4/4 meter), giving performers a grounded quadruple pulse with strong primary downbeats on beat 1 and supportive secondary accents on beat 3 with an authentic metronome benchmark calibrated at 108 BPM. The harmonic texture relies on classical voice-leading principles, balancing diatonic stability with subtle chromatic neighbor tones and functional cadential closures. Each phrase breathes naturally, offering the performer fertile ground for dynamic shading and harmonic color exploration.

3. Conservatory Performance Blueprint & Practice Guide

To master "Our Love is God" at an authentic conservatory standard, pianists must balance expressive musicality with mechanical efficiency. Focus on contemporary pop keyboard aesthetics: establish an unwavering groove in the accompaniment, balance vocal-line lead melodies in the right hand with clean syncopations, and avoid over-pedaling modern chord suspensions. Primary Pedagogical Focus: Bring out the dramatic vocal line with a highly cantabile touch while keeping accompanying figures darker and restrained underneath. Observe sudden dynamic contrasts carefully, and use half-pedal changes on harmonic shifts to support the musical-theater intensity without muddying the texture. Pedaling & Metronome Calibration: Exercise syncopated damper pedaling—depressing the sustain pedal immediately after striking the downbeat and clearing it cleanly on each chord change to eliminate acoustic muddiness. Begin practicing with hands separated at a measured practice tempo of approximately 75 BPM before gradually consolidating muscle memory and pacing up to the concert tempo of 108 BPM.
